A Message from the Interim Pastor…
All too often, folks read something in the Bible and they come to a conclusion about what it means – a once and done, forever conclusion. But when the Bible is approached this way, it becomes static and I’ve told you all more than once that the Bible is a living thing. It’s meaning is never static. It needs to be read in context – the context of the culture when various books were written – the context of whom the books were written for – but, most importantly, the context of the reader.
Our Wednesday evening Conversation on the Lawn gatherings have been centered on looking at random Bible passages in an attempt to find a different way to think about them. Because these conversations have been rather sparsely attended, I thought that I would bring the idea to the larger audience through this newsletter. So, for the next several weeks, I thought it might be fun to look at some random Bible passages and try to think of them in a new or different way.
Let’s start out with the final verse of my favorite funeral reading, John 14:6. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” Many people read this verse and think that it tells them that a person can’t get to heaven unless they believe in Jesus. But, what if… What if Jesus draws all people to himself – all people – whether they believe in him or not? Think about it.
Peace and blessing,
Pastor Michael
