What relationships in my life deepen my connection to God’s love? |
A Message from the Interim Pastor…
This Sunday is Holy Trinity Sunday – perhaps the most confusing day in all of the church year. In every congregation where I have served, I have found that almost everyone struggles with trying to understand the concept of three-in-one, one-in-three. Even though these same folks will recite the creed every week – when they profess their belief in the Trinity – they still have a hard time understanding it. In my early years in the ministry, every time that I tried to explain the concept to people, I fell a little short. And that’s because all the traditional explanations are just not adequate.
Over time, what I’ve come to realize is that the theology of the Trinity is nowhere near as complicated as we’ve tried to make it. In fact, it’s really rather simple. It tells us that God does not exist in isolation. It tells us that our God is a social god. Even before creation, God existed in relationship – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all in relationship with each other – a relationship so intimate that the three are one – a relationship so infused with love that the three are inseparable. A relationship of love. A relationship that is love.
And we have been created in that image. That means that we too have been created for relationship. You see, we only become whole persons when we are in relationship with each other and with God. When I preach at funerals, I almost always talk about how we do God’s work while we live on this earth through our relationships with others. I talk about how everyone is changed in some way through an encounter with us – through a relationship with us. You see, relationships are important because we have been created in God’s image and our God is a god of relationship.
So, when we hear in the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus tells us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,” we see that Jesus is telling us to go and be in relationship with the world – go and be in relationship with all people – go and show the world how much God loves all people.
Peace and blessing, Pastor Michael
